About venue
Located in the centre of Exeter’s historic quarter, St Nicholas Priory is one of the city’s oldest and most atmospheric heritage venues, combining over 900 years of history with intimate medieval event spaces in the heart of Devon’s cathedral city. Originally founded in 1087 by William the Conqueror and later transformed into a Tudor merchant’s house, the Grade I listed priory has evolved into one of Exeter’s most unique cultural and private event venues.
Tucked amongst the cobbled streets of the city centre, the venue blends medieval architecture, Tudor interiors and beautifully preserved historic features to create an event environment that feels authentic, characterful and entirely unlike a traditional hotel or conference venue. Exposed stone walls, timber beams, leaded windows and historic fireplaces run throughout the building, creating a memorable setting for intimate events, private dining and cultural gatherings.
Event Spaces
The Great Hall
At the heart of the priory is the impressive Great Hall, the venue’s principal event space and one of Exeter’s most distinctive historic interiors. Featuring vaulted ceilings, exposed stonework, timber beams and period architectural detailing, the space is ideal for receptions, private dining, ceremonies, talks and intimate corporate gatherings.
Historic Rooms & Heritage Spaces
Supporting the Great Hall are a collection of smaller historic rooms and heritage spaces spread throughout the priory. These areas work particularly well for breakout sessions, smaller meetings, drinks receptions and private experiences, while maintaining the building’s unique sense of history and atmosphere.
Gardens & Outdoor Areas
The priory also benefits from secluded outdoor spaces and gardens, providing additional space for drinks receptions, photography and breakout moments during warmer months. The gardens add to the venue’s peaceful and historic character despite its central city location.
Private Hire & Cultural Events
As one of Exeter’s most important historic buildings, the venue regularly hosts cultural events, performances, heritage experiences and community gatherings alongside private celebrations and corporate functions. Exclusive hire options allow clients to fully utilise the priory’s historic spaces for bespoke events.
Facilities & Services
St Nicholas Priory offers flexible event layouts, exclusive hire opportunities and access to one of Devon’s most unique heritage settings. While intentionally preserving its historic character, the venue can support a wide variety of event formats including receptions, presentations, dinners and performances.
